NSW:Young mother dies in road collision

SYDNEY, Aug 6 AAP - Police have questioning a man over the death of a young mother

whose car collided near Newcastle with another vehicle that failed to stop.

Police say the crash involving the woman's white Toyota Echo and another vehicle occurred
on Wakefield Road, Wakefield, about 8pm (AEST) on Friday.

Police believe the Toyota left the road and slammed into an electrical pole.

The driver, a 30-year-old woman travelling home to her young family, died at the scene.

Police allege the other vehicle, described as blue or turquoise in colour, and possibly
an early model Commodore, didn't stop.

On Saturday morning, police seized a vehicle from a Blackalls Park address, and questioned
a 25-year-old man.

Inquires are continuing.

NSW:Drought figures tempered by floods: Whan

NSW:Drought figures tempered by floods: Whan

SYDNEY, Dec 21 AAP - What a difference a year has made for NSW farmers.

Twelve months ago they were desperately hoping for some Christmas rain, with more than
80 per cent of the state stricken by drought.

But Christmas 2010 will be green and wet for farmers, with the latest government statistics
showing 100 per cent of the state having "satisfactory" agricultural conditions.

An improvement in the state's southeast agriculture district, south of Queanbeyan,
returned NSW to conditions not seen since 2001.

However, Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said the good news was tempered by
recent flooding, which had wiped out half a billion dollars worth of winter crops.

Mr Whan declared the Greater Hume Shire in southern NSW the latest natural disaster
area because of flooding, taking the total number of declarations to 42.

"Today's news on drought is something that 12 months ago we would have been jumping
for joy about - unfortunately now it is tempered by the impact that floods have had on
crops," he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

"We've seen still very positive news for people who are graziers, so there is a lot
of fodder in the state.

"But obviously the difficult news is for crops, where we've seen half a billion dollars
wiped off the value of (winter) crops, but still more harvested this year than we've seen
in previous drought years."

One silver lining to the recent rains were summer crop conditions, which Mr Whan said
had been "set up" for the months ahead.

"There is very good conditions for summer crop plantings, and we should see far more
planted in the summer than we have in past years," he said.

"Preliminary estimates are for the sowing of 529,595 hectares of summer crops, excluding
rice, which is more than double the estimated 239,652 hectares harvested last season."

VIC:Triple murders ignite gangland war fears

By Steve Lillebuen, Melissa Jenkins and Paul Mulvey

MELBOURNE, Aug 13 AAP - Three people have been shot dead on a bloody day in Melbourne,
sparking fears that another gangland war has erupted.

The mayhem began early on Friday with a drive-by shooter taking out the patriarch of
the Chaouk crime family, Macchour Chaouk, in the backyard of his home in Melbourne's west.

Six hours later, as homicide detectives expressed concern about the potential for revenge
attacks, a pokies bar along the city's busy Lygon Street exploded in violence with two
men shot dead.

One was found slumped over on the footpath, the other in the doorway of Players on Lygon.

Although both died before paramedics arrived at the scene, police quickly arrested
a suspect, a man believed to be in his 50s.

While police weren't immediately sure all three shootings were linked, they triggered
fears that another underworld war had broken out.

The last decade-long war only ended months ago with the prison death of Carl Williams.

"People are just freaked out," said Surbhi Puri, who runs a Lygon Street cafe near
the double murder scene.

"It's pretty scary."

At the 11am solo shooting, the gunman drove down a side street behind Chaouk's heavily
secured Brooklyn home and shot him through a fence.

The 65-year-old's wife, another family member and three of his pre-school aged grandchildren
were home at the time.

As they desperately tried to revive him, the gunman fled down Geelong Road and late
on Friday was still on the loose.

Chaouk had a string of convictions, including serious assault and two for heroin trafficking.

Two of his five sons, Ali and Matwali, are in custody on charges of assault and attempted
murder and 19-year-old son Omar is on bail following a raid on the house last month.

In 2005, police shot dead another son, Mohamed, during a raid.

Friday's daylight shooting occurred in a midst of a violent feud with the rival Haddara
family, whom police say could be involved in this latest outrage.

"We have to look at that as an avenue," Detective Senior Sergeant Murray Fraser told reporters.

As nearby schools were closed, Special Operations Group officers stormed the Chaouk
house and a large crowd of family and friends gathered outside.

Last month, another police raid resulted in the seizure of guns, ammunition and blank passports.

The raid followed a drive-by shooting in June in nearby Altona, in which Sam Haddara,
18, was shot in the face while sitting in a car.

Sam is a cousin of Mohamed Haddara, who was killed a year earlier in a drive-by shooting,
and there have been a series of alleged tit-for-tat violent incidents between the two
families since.

Chaouk's nephew Ahmed Hablas, 22, was charged in June with Haddara's murder.

Hablas' lawyer Alan Swanwick said his client feared for his life in custody as members
of the Haddara family had vowed to take revenge.

Mr Swanwick also represented Omar Chaouk in his bail hearing last month, arguing his
client should be released because he was needed to help protect his family.

Magistrate Fiona Stewart said that was precisely why he should not be released.

"There is an ongoing war between two families and the court should be extremely worried
about the danger posed to the community by it," she had told the court.

After last month's raid, police said they believed the situation was under control
despite the threat of violence.

"We would like to send a clear message to any of those involved in this sort of activity
that ... we have the resources and the capacity to make a difference and solve those crimes,"

Superintendent Doug Fryer said.

Macchour Chaouk came to Australia from Lebanon in 1969. Six years later he was charged
with assault and in 1983 was convicted of trafficking heroin.

In 1985, he was charged with assaulting police and in 1991 of recklessly causing serious injury.

In 2000, he was sentenced to five years in prison for trafficking in heroin.

Police remained on guard outside the Chaouk home overnight.

Tas: Sotheby's ignoring calls to withdraw Aborginal busts

By Paul Carter

HOBART, Aug 21 AAP - Sotheby's auction house is ignoring calls to withdraw the busts
of two Aboriginal leaders from sale.

The 1836 busts of Tasmanian Aboriginal leaders Woureddy and his wife Truganini are
set to fetch up to $700,000 at a Sotheby's auction in Melbourne on Monday.

Tasmanian Greens leader Nick McKim and Aboriginal activist Michael Mansell want the
busts withdrawn from sale and given to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.

Asked to respond to their call, Sotheby's spokeswoman Anne Wall said the sculptures
are only one pair of multiple sets held at numerous art galleries and institutions.

"While these were on loan to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery for many years they
have, more recently, been on display in the National Portrait Gallery," she said.

"The owners have contracted Sotheby's to handle the sale on their behalf. They will
be offered at auction Monday 24 August."

Mr McKim said Sotheby's must realise the importance of these images to Tasmania's Aboriginal
community, and immediately withdraw them from sale.

"To treat these images purely as works of art is disrespectful to the ancestors of
Truganini and Woureddy," he said in a statement on Friday.

Mr McKim said the state and federal governments should purchase the works and hand
them back to the Aboriginal community if they are not withdrawn from sale.

The patinated plaster busts, about 75cm tall, were originally bought by Hobart convict
turned businessman Judah Solomon and were made by Benjamin Law, who knew Truganini and
her husband, in the 1830s.

The Solomon family has always owned the works but they were on loan to the Tasmanian
Museum and Art Gallery for 26 years until they helped open the National Portrait Gallery
in Canberra last year.

Mr Mansell said Truganini and Woureddy are dead and they can't defend themselves against
the symbolism that is portrayed by the racists of Australia who abuse their memory.

"The auction house should take responsibility and so should the vendor," Mr Mansell
said in a statement.

Others sets of these busts by Benjamin Law are held at the Tasmanian Museum and Art
Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, South Australian
Museum (on loan to Art Gallery of South Australia), Australian Museum (on loan to Art
Gallery of New South Wales), Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, British Museum and
Musee de lHomme, while individual busts are held in numerous other institutions, a Sotheby's
statement said.

MELBOURNE, Aug 4 AAP - A man accused of drugging and raping six women over a 15-year

Harry William Barkas, 46, of South Yarra, was today committed to stand trial on six
counts of rape, eight of administering a drug, two of sexual penetration of a child under

He appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges
which involved six victims between 1990 and 2005.

Magistrate Duncan Reynolds found there was not enough evidence to proceed with two
further charges relating to a seventh victim.

Barkas will appear in the County Court in September for a directions hearing.

A trial is expected to begin next June.

Barkas made no application for bail.

Victoria's chief prosecutor Jeremy Rapke QC announced last month that another 59 charges

Qld: Beattie, mayor nut out solution to Toowoomba's water crisis

BRISBANE, Aug 1 AAP - Queensland Premier Peter Beattie is meeting Toowoomba's mayor
today to work on an alternative solution to the city's growing water crisis.

More than 61 per cent of residents of the drought-stricken Darling Downs city west
of Brisbane rejected on Saturday a referendum proposing the recycling of sewage for drinking
water.

The poll, the first of its kind in Australia, was seen as a touchstone for community
attitudes to the recycling of effluent, which is already in widespread use overseas as
well as some parts of Australia.

The Toowoomba council must now look at other ways to address the city's water woes,
including drilling bores.

Mr Beattie said he was willing to consider whatever option Toowoomba Mayor Di Thorley
puts on table at their meeting in Brisbane.

But he said it was unlikely the government would allow the Toowoomba council to tap
into Brisbane's Wivenhoe Dam.

"The people have spoken and my job is to put that behind us and see what help we can
give," Mr Beattie told ABC Radio today.

Ms Thorley said the city must put the referendum behind it and focus on other solutions.

"Whatever happens now has huge environmental repercussions, as well as huge costs," she said.

"There's no silver bullet."

Vic: Gatto pays tribute to underworld friend

MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - Colourful Melbourne identity Dominic "Mick" Gatto has delivered
a touching eulogy to his great mate, slain underworld figure Mario Condello.

Condello, 53, a disbarred lawyer, was gunned down in the driveway of his sprawling
home in North Road, East Brighton, on Monday night.

More than 600 mourners attended his funeral at St Ignatius Catholic Church in inner
suburban Richmond today.

Gatto, whom police fear could be targeted next in Melbourne's underworld war, said
Condello was a loving, compassionate family man whom he would miss greatly.

"To say farewell to my friend Mario is something that I find impossible to deal with,"

Gatto told the packed church.

"To know this noble gentleman was to love him."

"I say goodbye to Mario Condello, a man among men who I'll miss more than words can say.

"To his family, I'll always be there for you like a true friend."

Gatto said Condello spoon-fed and washed his mother Marina on her deathbed, and rubbed
ice on her lips to soothe her.

"His only concern was her comfort and well-being," he said.

Condello loved his three children and his wife, Vanda, he added.

"They shared many challenges over the past two years but they always strived to live
another day."

Gatto praised Condello's work as a volunteer drug counsellor and told of his strange
sense of humour.

At a wedding the pair attended, Condello had eaten the eye from a barbecued pig's head
on the table and offered the second to him, which Gatto said he reluctantly ate.

Condello then ate the intestines, he said.

Outside the service, a woman mourner yelled at press photographers standing across
the street from the church, telling them to leave and to "show some respect".

Condello's family was whisked away in one of three black Lincoln Town Car stretch limousines.

His body, carried in a black Cadillac hearse, will be interred at the Carlton Mausoleum
at the Melbourne General Cemetery today.

The Internet: It works for them!

We've recently had Duncan and others beat up on Internet dating. The people you meet are shallow liars, etc., etc. Today, we hear from some who've had success.

MARK: I'm a 35-year-old professional wedding photographer, and in my estimate, 20 percent of my clients met on a dating service like Match.com, eHarmony, JDate, etc. It's not for everybody, but many people are happy with the services and find it successful. In fact, I'm getting married in November to a lovely woman whom I met on Match.com five years ago, so I admit some bias in this regard.

I understand Duncan's frustration, but I'd venture that all the accusations he makes of women on these sites can apply equally to the men, particularly the comments about judgments made based on profile pictures. Heck, I'm guilty of that, and I was a balding, overweight 30-something who probably should not have been so picky when I started using these sites.

Using these sites well does require one to have a good B.S. detector and to exercise due diligence, but it's not — from my experience — a wasteland of deception and fraud. At least not any more so than many traditional avenues of dating. The key, in my opinion, is not to waste too much time e-mailing back and forth, but to exchange a few initial e-mails and then meet in person to see if there's chemistry or not. There may be a lot of misses, but dating is not ordering off a menu. Go into it with no expectations and no pressure, and just see where it takes you.

That said, I can see how Internet dating may not work for a lot of people. It's just one way, among many, of meeting people, and if it's not working for you, perhaps more traditional methods like introductions from friends and family, hobby/volunteer/community groups, etc., might work better.

In the end, love is fickle, and I don't fault Duncan for his disappointment, although I'm afraid his experiences may be negatively affecting his perception of the women who use these sites, and perhaps some of that cynicism is bleeding into his communication with potential dates, which, in turn, spirals into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

PETER: I met my fiancee on JDate four years ago. Things progressed nicely from the day that we first met face to face. Everything just clicked, and we've been inseparable ever since. Not only is this woman a kind, loving, warm and compassionate person, but if you're alone with her for 30 minutes, she'll find a way to make you feel better about yourself.

HELEN: My son, a father of two, was 50 and divorced but not soured on marriage. He was looking for a wife. So, since everybody else was doing it, he tried an Internet dating site. He met a 50-year-old widow with two children who was looking for a husband. They dated for a year and then got married. They're still happily married today, nine years after their wedding in May 2002.

Elastic Networks Unveils Next-Generation Product Family - Now Supports 6 Mbps on a Singer Copper Pair.

New 6000 Products Deliver Only Burst-Mode, High-Speed DSL Solution

For Both the Carrier and Enterprise Markets

ATLANTA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- NetWorld+Interop -- Elastic Networks(TM), Inc., the leading provider of burst-mode DSL hardware and innovative connectivity software solutions for the carrier and enterprise markets, today announced the 6000 product family, which enables EtherLoop(TM) technology bi-directional bandwidth capabilities with speeds up to 6 Mbps on a single copper phone line. This next-generation product family is grounded in Elastic Networks' EtherLoop technology, which enables burst-mode, high-speed access technology and complies with 802.3 Ethernet standards and emerging ANSI burst-mode DSL standards.

"The evolution of our EtherLoop technology platform meets the industry's need for high-speed DSL solutions that can be deployed both in-building and in the outside loop," said Phil Griffith, vice president, marketing, Elastic Networks. "Elastic Networks is delivering the only integrated, high-speed access solution, eliminating the need to search through the multitude of differing XDSL offerings or proprietary in-building technologies."

Single Technology Platform for High-Speed Solutions

With availability beginning in the fourth quarter of this year, Elastic Network's new 6000 product family provides a single technology platform to address high-speed access applications. The new product line features:

* ELMo 6000 -- The ELMo 6000 is the backbone of the EtherLoop system that

directs and controls voice and data traffic. The ELMo 6000 supports

120 users per shelf and provides data rates up to 6 Mbps on a NEBS

compliant platform. Applications include business and consumer Internet

access.

* ELMo 6000 LX -- The ELMo 6000 LX (LAN Extension) allows for easy

interconnection of entire LANs over 10/100 BaseT connections and network

connectivity through one or more EtherLoop ports. Applications include

transparent LAN extension services for business/enterprise and other

markets requiring dedicated 6 Mbps bandwidth and LAN-like services.

* Elite 6000 -- The Elite 6000 is the single end user network device that

connects to either an ELMo 6000 or ELMo 6000 LX and provides voice and

simultaneous data rates of 6 Mbps. The Elite 6000 is capable of

bridging high-speed access service to as many as 128 client devices

through simple Ethernet hubbing configurations.

New 6000 Product Family Delivers Unique Benefits to Customers

Only Elastic Networks' 6000 product family can deliver a high-speed, deployable solution for both the carrier and enterprise customer. Product benefits include:

* Speed: Performs up to 6 Mbps in both directions, with evolution to

10 Mbps in 2000.

* Service Adaptive Bandwidth: Shapes its upstream and downstream bandwidth

performance according to the consumer or business application, versus

conventional DSL technologies that permanently constrain upstream and

downstream bandwidth.

* Deployability: Unlike constant bit rate technologies, the new 6000

product family is a robust solution working with cable binder group

interference, bridge taps and wire gauge changes in the outside plant

loop.

* Interference Detection: Leverages its burst-mode EtherLoop architecture

by "listening," in the quiet period between bursts, to the copper binder

group for other interferors. If service interferors are detected,

EtherLoop's spectrum management capability provides notification to the

carrier of any foreign service impairments in the binder group.

* Spectral Compatibility: Possesses the inherent ability to avoid

interference with other services including ISDN/IDSL, T-1, ADSL, G.lite,

HDSL and SDSL.

* Integrated Solution: Fully compatible with Elastic Networks' YesWare

Software Suite of enterprise applications and SNMP-based service

management solutions.

* Easy Migration: Existing Elastic Networks ELMo 8 and 120 systems are

easily upgraded to 6000 family capabilities with a simple circuit pack

upgrade from Elastic Networks.

Meeting Needs of Both Carrier and Enterprise Markets

Elastic Networks' new product family is the first high-speed DSL solution to effectively address both the carrier and enterprise markets.

For the carrier market, the 6000 product family answers the challenges of traditional DSL service deployment over outside plant copper loops by reducing service technician truck rolls and eliminating loop qualification and re- engineering efforts, dramatically increasing service deployability and service provider profitability.

For the enterprise market, the EtherLoop-based 6000 product family continues to deliver simple, seamless LAN-like connectivity over existing twisted pair wiring for a variety of applications. EtherLoop enables high- speed in-building access without labor intensive building rewiring or modifications.

Scanbuy Supplies Dynamic QR Code Solution for '2012 Ford Focus Hunt'.

Scanbuy, Inc., a provider of mobile barcode solutions, announced that it is providing a dynamic QR (quick response) code solution for Ford Motor Company's "Ford Focus Hunt."

According to a release, the promotion is the latest example of how major brands and events including Bluefly, Miller Lite, The Home Depot and the Tribeca Film Festival rely on Scanbuy for mobile barcode solutions that enable interactive campaigns and encourage consumer participation.

During Internet Week New York, held through June 13, the Ford Focus Hunt will release a new QR code each day. Each QR code corresponds with a badge, which was designed by graphic artist Matthew Langille, and highlights different features of the 2012 Ford Focus. Scanbuy also designed custom QR codes leading to the badges that depict a different Ford Focus driving through the code. The goal of the "Ford Focus Hunt" is to collect all five of the badges by scanning their respective QR Codes using the ScanLife app, or any other standardized scanner application. By collecting all five badges, participants are automatically entered for a chance to win Ford's IWNY Prize Pack, which includes two tickets to the Webby Awards, a one-night-stay in a suite at the Roger Smith Hotel, and a chauffeured ride to the Webby Awards in a 2012 Ford Focus.

The company noted that to power the logic behind the "Hunt," Ford will be using ScanLife's premium data feeds to identify the unique user and the unique QR code to deliver dynamic content in real time. Therefore, each user has to scan each of the codes in order to qualify for the prize. The ScanLife platform will enable Ford to track and analyze participation in real time to understand how attendees are responding to the sweepstakes.

"We're thrilled to help Ford leverage that opportunity to build buzz around the 2012 Focus," said Mike Wehrs, CEO and President of Scanbuy. "Internet Week is a perfect place to deploy more advanced campaigns that really tap into the power of our ScanLife platform and the data feeds that can deliver really dynamic and innovative experiences."

Sony removes data posted by hackers from site.

TOKYO: Sony said yesterday that it had removedA from the Internet theA names and partial addressesA of 2,500 sweepstakes contestants that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website, and said it did not know when it could restart its PlayStation video games network.

The company, under fire since hackers accessed personal data fromA about 100A million user accounts of its PlayStation Network andA PC-based online gaming services, saidA in a statement details posted on the inactive website also included three unconfirmed e-mail addresses.

The data came from customers who entered a 2001 product sweepstakes contest. The list did not include information on credit cards, social security numbers or passwords.

"The website was out of date and inactive when discovered as part of the continued attacks on Sony," Sony said, adding that the company took the website down shortly after finding out about the postings on Thursday.

Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer apologised on Friday to users of the firm's PlayStation Network and other online services, breaking his silence on the massive data breach.

The company said last Sunday that it would begin restoring services within the week but a spokeswoman said on Saturday this would not be possible, and that no date had been fixed for when services would resume.

The incident may prove to be a significant setback for a company looking to recover after being out-manoeuvred by Apple in portable music and Samsung Electronics in flat-screen TVs.

In video games, it faces a tough fight with Nintendo's Wii game console and Microsoft's Xbox.

"This wait is becoming so tedious. I know there needs to be a lot of testing, but it is really getting annoying. I am seriously considering changing to the Xbox," said message posted by a user called Cryonic UCX on the US PlayStation blog. "I love my PlayStation, but Sony is not doing well in the online. Sony, you need to step your game up!"

On Friday, Sony shares ended 2.3 per cent lower in a broader market down 1.5 per cent, extending its total losses to about six per cent since it revealed the breach. The Nikkei is up around three per cent over the same period.

Sony issued its first warning on the PlayStation break-in a week after it detected a problem with the network on April 19, infuriating many users around the world. Sony said it needed time to work out the extent of the damage.

The hackers have not been identified, but Internet vigilante group Anonymous, which had claimed responsibility for previous attacks on Sony and other corporations, denied it was behind the data theft.

The group's statement came after Sony said Anonymous was indirectly responsible for the attack on the company.

Sony, which is set to report its annual earnings on May 26, has yet to specify the financial effect of the network breach. Sony has defended its response to a massive Internet security breach in a letter to Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, who has accused the company of dragging its feet in notifying consumers.

Blumenthal, a former state attorney general, has said that Sony acted too slowly in sending out 500,000 emails per hour to consumers after the breach that exposed personal data of more than 100 million of its online video game users.

Sony has said it could not rule out that some 12.3 million credit card numbers had been obtained during the hacking. Blumenthal said in a statement on Friday that Sony had taken a "strong first step."

On Thursday, Sony's CEOHoward Stringer broke his silence about the hacking by apologising in a letter to consumers posted on PlayStation's website.

Indian heritage in South Africa.(News)

I have always been aware that I have Indian ancestry on at least one side of my family and set out to trace my Indian roots, little knowing the fascinating history I would unearth.

My first port of call was my grandmother, my mother's mother, Theresa Evans, formerly Theresa Paul. I was aware that along her line my Indian roots would be easily traceable as she often made reference to her father, who was of Indian descent. Some of my family on her side was categorised as Indian.

Like my grandmother, I am classified South African coloured so my Indian ancestry is not immediately apparent and comes as a surprise to many people.

MY grandmother said her father was Michael Louis Paul and he was one of eight children. They were classified Indian. He married Alice Coleman, who was half Irish and half St Helenan.

He met her while working in Cape Town.

"There were eight children: Eugene, Grace, Francis - he was my godfather so I have his second name - Cecil, Beatrice, Vincent, Rose and my father Michael," my grandmother said. "My grandfather was Henry Louis Paul and he was an Indian from India. He was one of the first Indian translators in Natal. There have been write-ups about him in the newspaper."

This was obviously something my grandmother had never shared with any of her five children because it came as a surprise to all of them.

"I don't know much about my grandfather because I was four years old when he died. We lived in Lancers Road in Pietermaritzburg. My grandmother was Ellen Elizabeth and she always carried sweets in her pocket."

My grandmother had given me enough information to start my search for my Indian roots and try to establish when my great-great-grandfather, Henry Louis Paul, arrived in Natal.

If my grandmother was correct in saying that Henry Louis Paul was one of the first Indian interpreters, chances were there would be historic records to support this.

I began searching the internet for Henry Louis Paul in the hope that I could find a lead, but instead what I found was a thesis on my great-great-grandfather which was written by Prinisha Badassy as part of a Degree of Bachelor of Social Science - Honours in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Natal. Badassy's thesis was on Indian interpreters in the Colony of Natal, 1880-1910 and one of the "ambiguous" stars of her thesis was Henry Louis Paul.

An entire chapter, titled A Diabolic Conspiracy, was dedicated to my great-great-grandfather, and documents his arrival in South Africa, life as an interpreter in the Natal Civil Service, his failings and influence and contributions to the Indian community in Natal.

This included helping Mahatma Gandhi with the formation of the Natal Indian Congress.

According to the thesis, Henry Louis Paul was born in Madras a Roman Catholic British Indian, and arrived in the Colony in Natal in 1879. His parents were Anthony Joseph Paul and Mary Paul. He died at the age of 73 on June 1, 1935. By the time of his death he was a retired civil servant and lived at 15 Lancers Road, Pietermaritzburg. My grandmother fondly remembers this home and notes it "even had a fence".

BUT it is Badassy's research into his colourful life as an interpreter which astounded my family and myself. Badassy's research found that Paul played a double role and these two roles were diametrically opposed.

He often found himself at loggerheads with members of the Indian community and his fellow interpreters.

"On the one hand he was an interpreter in the Natal Civil Service, which in itself was marked by many contradictions, and second, he was an Indian nationalist. Both these roles, however, brought him into serious conflict, if not with the government, then with the Indian population... there were numerous complaints about his attitude towards the general public...

"In addition, his role in the formation of the Natal Indian Congress and his relationship with Gandhi are two areas of his life that have received very little attention.

"Paul was one of those characters whose political endeavours are not celebrated," writes Badassy.

Gandhi wrote in his diary entry on June 24, 1894, that Paul had visited him that evening to discuss the conditions of the Indians and Badassy says the entry was fundamental in understanding Paul's role in helping Gandhi develop a network of important connections and alerting him to the problems faced by the Indian community in Natal.

Excerpts from Gandhi's diary document several meetings between Paul and Gandhi over the plight of Indians living in Natal.

Badassy said the entries showed how close Gandhi and Paul were and how each influenced the other. She says Paul played a role in first making Gandhi aware of the problems faced by the Indian community in this region and setting up contacts in Natal that led to the establishment of the Natal Indian Congress.

"Paul was hardly a revolutionary figure that Gandhi was to become, but the fact that it was through him that Gandhi stayed in Natal needs to be recognised.

"In addition to this it was Paul who played a part in edging Gandhi away from his initial focus upon the interests of the trading community towards an inclusion of the Indenture as his nationalistic struggle."

In her concluding chapter, Badassy writes that Paul embodies the ambivalent and contradictory nature of these interpreters and notes some of his contributions.

Considering the fact that he was involved in so many different facets of Indian life in Natal, it is quite evident that the relationship that Gandhi shared with Paul deserves much greater attention than it has been given.

Doing so leads to the realisation that Paul played an extremely important role in Indian politics and in Gandhi's political development.

"He was also the founder and president of many different sport clubs, such as Natal Indian Football Association, United XI Cricket Club, Greyville Sporting Association, Indian Benevolent Society and the United Sports Association, which became the Durban Indian Sports Ground Association (Currie's Fountain).

"Apart from that he was also responsible for the formation of various soccer clubs in the 1880s and 1890s.

"He was also instrumental in the development of cricket and cycling among the Indians. When his son was refused entry into a 'European Boys' private high school he lobbied for an Indian Higher Grade school. Since Indian schools only taught till Standard Seven, Paul exerted his influence within the civil service and drew upon the economic resources that his position provided to found the high school at the corner of Grey and Alice streets in 1899.

"At the school's end-of-year function, Gandhi said that had it not been for Paul, the school would not have been successful. In his closing report the school acting headmaster said: 'And how shall I begin or end my high estimate of Mr Paul's constant labours in the school's best interest? In the record of the initiation, growth, and present state of this institution, Mr Paul's name must take a prominent place - to him we owe a fine photograph; him we must thank for a similarly framed group sent to the government, and graciously acknowledged by Mr Russell. So long as Mr Paul stands by the school it must succeed.'

"In 1903, he was also active in Sandailu's Christy Minstrel Band in Overport.

"He later established and became the first president of the Natal Indian Educational Association between the years 1911 and 1914.

"But above all of these achievements, it is Henry Louis Paul's role in the making of the Mahatma that is most intriguing," she said.

The Independent on Saturday will be carrying regular news and features to commemorate the arrival of the first Indians on South African shores 150 years ago. This week reporter Carvin Goldstone takes a look at his links to the indentured labourers who arrived between 1860 and 1911 and his great-great grandfather's close working relationship with Mahatma Gandhi.

Quarterly Earnings Falter at Texas' Benson Financial Corp.(Originated from San Antonio Express-News)

May 23--Benson Financial Corp., the holding company for Groos Bank and Kelly Field National Bank in San Antonio, said its quarterly net earnings fell to $1.21 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with net earnings before extraordinary items of $1.36 million, or 32 cents a share, for the year-earlier period.

When extraordinary earnings are taken into account, the company's net earnings totaled $2.51 million for the first quarter of 1995. During that period last year, Benson redeemed preferred stock for a gain of $1.15 million after taxes.

Benson attributed the quarterly drop in net earnings to an increase in the company's provision for loan losses because more loans were charged off in 1996 compared with the same quarter in 1995.

The drop in earnings also was caused by a jump in the holding company's effective tax rate from 28 percent in 1995 to 34 percent this year.

Benson's loan portfolio totaled $264.4 million and its deposit base was $410.2 million on March 31.

That compares with a loan portfolio of $279.9 million and a deposit base of $406.6 million for the same period in 1995.

Benson said the amount of its loan portfolio fell because it made fewer consumer loans, there was more competition in the marketplace and because its credit standards have tightened.

The holding company also said its nonperforming assets are down more than 20 percent in the quarter, falling to $5 million on March 31 from $6.5 million on March 31, 1995.

Benson agreed to merge with Norwest Corp. late last year. Benson's shareholders will vote on the merger at a special meeting set for Wednesday.

NOB,

Omission from ESPN poll irritates Konerko, White Sox.

Byline: Mark Gonzales

BALTIMORE _ Less than two years after winning a World Series title, the White Sox aren't even considered among the top four teams in Chicago included in an ESPN poll.

The Sox were omitted from an ESPN SportsNation poll that asked: "Which sports team do you most associate with Chicago?

Listed were the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls and the rival Cubs.

First baseman Paul Konerko took exception to the Sox's omission during an interview Friday on ESPNews. When asked which team he would vote for, Konerko answered "Bears."

Any ESPN spokesman said there was no specific reason for leaving the Sox off the poll, adding the network asked Konerko for a guest interview. The poll conducted in each city, was limited to one team from the NBA, NHL, NFL and Major League Baseball.

The spokesman for the Bristol, Conn., based-company contended this wasn't a slight to the Sox and that the other cities face the same limitations in the poll.

It will be interesting to see how the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Jets, Giants, Rangers and Islanders will react, to say nothing of the Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers, Ducks and Kings.

"I know they weren't happy when we swept the Red Sox in the (American League) Division Series in 2005, but this seems like a crazy way to get back at us," smiled Scott Reifert, the Sox's vice president of communications.

One is enough

Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was careful not to be overly critical of the relievers' inability to maintain leads for closer Bobby Jenks.

But Guillen maintained his reluctance to use Jenks before the ninth inning. Jenks blew a save and was saddled with a 5-4 loss in which he gave up the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth in relief of Jon Garland on June 20.

"Hopefully, somebody out of the bullpen will help Bobby to get to the point," Guillen said. "That's been our problem all year, to get to Bobby."

Extra innings

Aaron Poreda, the Sox's first pick in the 2007 draft, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday and stay in the bullpen until he regains full strength.

Poreda was clocked at 97 m.p.h. in his last start for Advanced-Rookie Great Falls on June 28 but experienced tenderness in his left arm. He has struck out 10 in nine innings. ... Left-hander Andrew Sisco allowed eight runs on nine hits in one-third of an inning in Triple-A Charlotte's 11-3 loss at Columbus. ... The Sox have signed their first eight picks from the June amateur draft and are making a strong effort to sign 10th-round pick Brian Guinn, a shortstop from Berkeley (Calif.) High School who signed a letter-of-intent to play at Cal.

Our man in hot water... undiplomatic confessions of a diplomat; Former ambassador forced to apologise after causing outrage in tiny Borders communityby sharing local gossip and feuds with the world in Internet diary.

Byline: FIDELMA COOK

AS a former ambassador to Kuwait and Jordan and an expert on Middle Eastern politics and Islam, Peter Hinchcliffe is a master of the delicate art of diplomacy.

Author of several books on the world's most volatile states, the 67-year-old has a reputation as a fair and balanced observer. In fact, in almost 40 years at the Foreign Office, he never put a foot wrong. Until now.

His retirement to a former manse in a village in the Borders should have set the seal on a long and distinguished career in service to the Crown.

But somewhere between the Middle East and the Berwickshire hamlet of Hutton (population less than 200) he 'lost' his most valuable asset . . . his tact.

Last week he admitted that in the space of a few months he managed to alienate most of his neighbours, faced accusations of outrageous 'colonial behaviour' and 'racism' and had been forced to issue a series of 'grovelling apologies'.

'It is absolutely fair to say I've been a most undiplomatic diplomat,' public school educated Hinchcliffe conceded, head in hands. 'I've had to go around the village cap in hand and apologise to all I unwittingly offended.'

Mr Hinchcliffe's troubles began after he started Musings From The Merse, an Internet diary, or 'blog', on life in and around Hutton and neighbouring Paxton.

As chairman of the community council, he was in a perfect position to chart the ups and downs of rural life with a series of whimsical anecdotes, or so he thought, alongside the daily doings of his pet peacock and visiting pheasants Ollie and Cocky.

Writing as Huttonian, he particularly enjoyed ranting about several stalwarts of the local church who were embroiled in a heated dispute over a proposed new village hall.

According to one villager: 'Some of the things he wrote were outrageous.

Recently he's tempered it a lot but we're fed up to the back teeth with his blog. It's meant to be humorous but it comes across as patronising and colonialist - he's taken a pop at virtually everybody in the village.'

Another local said: 'He seems to hate everything to do with village life with his snide comments. He's ranted about landowners, farmers, revealed private business like how much cottages have really sold for and comes across as definitely anti-Scottish. When he was outed, he tried to deny it was him but eventually had to admit it.' Mr Hinchcliffe was exposed as the author after a local did an Internet search on the village to see what came up. Outraged by the blog's contents, the local distributed a copy to every adult in Hutton.

When he was confronted, Mr Hinchcliffewho once came under fire in Dar es Salaam, admitted his role.

'The person who downloaded it thought they had been unfairly pilloried by my comment that it was madness to consider building a new community hall at a cost of some [pounds sterling]400,000,' he said. 'I suggested we could use part of the church as they often do in England.

'There were a few other people who were very offended and took umbrage about other little asides, even though I never named anybody.

I had to make grovelling apologies.

'I did do something very awful to one woman by calling her house Sewage Cottage. We'd had a lot of people staying and, as often happens in the country, our sewers filled up.

'By unblocking ours it forced everything down the hill and meant it overflowed into her cottage.

'I may have given the sale price of

another cottage but it was only in a discussion on house prices in the area.

I do take exception to being called racist and anti-Scottish - some of my best friends are Scottish. And through my Northern Irish background I am half-Scottish.

Colonial behaviour? Well, I did start off in the Colonial Office . . .

'I do regret some of the things I said, but I did it with a pinch of humour.

There are little groups of people in this village who have been top dogs for so long in various aspects of their lives that they don't like it when someone questions them.

'I haven't abused my position as chairman of the community council . . . all I did was give certain things a wider airing. All I ever intended with the blog was to document the ramblings of a townie in rural Scotland where you can't get broadband, there's no pub, no services. Really it was for my three daughters, I didn't think anyone else would read it.' Since his outing, Mr Hinchcliffe, who was also High Commissioner to Zambia and holds honorary fellowships at Queen's University, Belfast, and Edinburgh, has tempered his blog.

'One or two people have said my blog is all very boring now,' he said. 'But I'm getting more hits on the site than ever before.

I do have a comments section for anybody who feels very aggrieved . . .

but I haven't had a single one.' That may be a short-lived state of affairs.

He is now considering extending his musings into a book with illustrations or maybe even cartoons.

THOUGHTS OF THE

BERWICKSHIRE

BLOGGER ON A COMMUNITY COUNCIL ROW OVER SLURRY ON THE ROADS . . .

These may be simple country folk in the best Ambridge tradition but they are masters of the dagger between the ribs.

Machiavelli would have been out of his depth in this company.

ON VILLAGE 'PARANOIA '. . .

Another example of local paranoia was the comment by a person connected with the School Action Group (SAG - unfortunate acronym for a group predominantly female) to the effect that the community council was spying on them. Why, I hear you cry?

Because the chairman (Hinchcliffe) and secretary were twice in thepub during their meetings!

ON HUTTON ...

For all the warmth and friendliness you encounter most of the time, there are undercurrents which take time to suss out, and there is the inevitable feeling that if you are very new it is not a good idea to throw your weight about or make too many waves in the apparently smooth water of our tranquil existence.

ON FELLOW VILLAGERS ...

Huttonian is in the firing line as he again is forced to confront the oligarchy which, in effect, rules this village. To avoid future libel actions, let us call them the Gang of Three.

There are good historical precedents going back through the founders of the SDP, the three bears and Genghis Khan and his two aunts.

ON CARAVANNERS ...

We have our Amazons here too - mostly caravanners. Historically, Amazons have only one breast as they removed one so as not to impede their bow-drawing arm. Things have changed and some of our modern-day Amazons are so well-built that they may now have grown an extra breast for barging their way through the narrow aisles of Morrisons.
