NEW LAW QUALIFIES THE QUALITY OF GAS.(Living Today)

Y ou may not notice any difference at your friendly gas station, but a new law that takes effect Sunday, April 1, will guarantee that what is posted on the gas pump is what will find its way into your gas tank.

After being stalled in neutral for almost a decade, New York has joined 28 other states by establishing a motor fuel quality law.

Sponsored by state Assemblyman Jerrold L. Nadler, D-Manhattan, and Sen. Joseph L. Bruno, R-Brunswick, and strongly supported by the New York State Automobile Association, the new law will:

*Establish uniform fuel quality standards throughout the state.

*Require a prominent alcohol- content notice on all service station pumps dispensing alcohol-gasoline blends.

*Facilitate stepped-up testing and laboratory analysis of suspect fuel.

*Significantly stiffen penalties for violators, including fines of up to $5,000.
